Outdoor Bath: Transforming a Hertfordshire Garden into a Luxury Outdoor Bathing Retreat
Gas Mark 1 Herts Bathrooms & Kitchens specialise in bespoke plumbing installations that help Hertfordshire homeowners create unique living spaces. This recent outdoor bath installation transformed a secluded section of our customer's garden into a luxurious outdoor bathing retreat. Combining practical plumbing expertise with thoughtful design and craftsmanship.
Our customer (who had a bathroom, a cloakroom and a full central heating system installation with us) wanted to create a peaceful outdoor space. Somewhere they could relax and reconnect with nature while enjoying the comforts of a traditional bath. However, with limited space inside the property meant they were looking for an alternative solution. Inspiration came after a holiday where there was a freestanding outdoor bath overlooking a lake. Wanting to recreate that same spa-like experience at home, they approached us to explore an outdoor bath installation within their own garden.
Installing a bath outdoors requires careful planning, every element must be designed to withstand the changing British weather while remaining reliable, durable and visually appealing. The customer chose a freestanding Margravine bath in gloss grey from Eastbrook to compliment their paving. The joy of this bath is its depth, which allows for a really luxurious soak! The customer’s covered patio area provides excellent protection from the elements. One of the most interesting aspects of the project was their desire to minimise water waste. They wanted a solution that would allow water to be reused to irrigate their established garden, making the installation as environmentally conscious as possible.
Following a detailed site survey and acceptance of our quotation, Barney led the project from start to finish. For a stable, attractive foundation, he constructed a bespoke timber base using railway sleepers, ensuring the freestanding bath was perfectly level and securely supported. Once the bath was positioned, Barney completed the plumbing installation, connecting the water supply, carefully concealing services to maintain the clean aesthetic of the outdoor space. The waste was run into a large tray behind the bath to collect the water.
To protect the bath when not in use, Barney designed and handcrafted a custom plywood cover. The lid keeps the bath clean, safe and protected from debris while remaining lightweight and easy to remove. It was finished with a grey stain to complement the exterior of the bath and blend seamlessly with the surrounding garden design.
Every stage of this garden bath installation was completed with durability, efficiency and long-term reliability in mind. The finished project creates a beautiful outdoor feature that offers a unique bathing experience in the stunning garden setting. The combination of bespoke carpentry, professional plumbing and thoughtful design delivered a practical, low-maintenance installation that the customer can enjoy throughout the year.
What Our Customer Had to Say
“Barney did a brilliant job fitting it on our patio, and I’m loving my outdoor soaks each evening, surrounded by all the herbs we’ve planted in pots around the tub! He also created an amazing lid for the bath, which is both practical and beautifully made. The water isn’t wasted either – we have been using it to water our garden, which was an important part of the project for us. Thank you for making my dream come true. We know we can always rely on you all to do a fantastic job.”
